Golf Cart Steering wheel covers have only recently started to become a main stream golf product. The reason for that is to date, golf cart steering wheel cover manufacturers have mainly targeted private cart owners with products that do not lend themselves to ease of use, portability, sustanability and marketability. Leather is a great example of this.
Ease of use. Leather golf cart steering wheel covers are rigid and will only fit one size steering wheel. They need to stay firmly mounted onto the steering wheel they are installed on making installing and removing them non-trivial. Fine for a private cart owner, but problematic for a golfer that would like to use the cover on any cart they may happen upon when playing their favorite courses. EZ-GO steering wheels range from 13" - 13.5". Club Car steering wheels range from 13.5" to 14". Yamaha steering wheel are 14". To accommodate this range, a golfer would need at least 2 leather covers. Neoprene covers are stretchy making them easy to install and remove and fit any size golf cart steering wheel.
Portability. Leather is heavy and doesn't package well. Once removing a leather steering wheel cover from a cart steering wheel, trying storing it in a golf bag. Due to it's rigidity, there is not a pocket large enough on most golf bags to store it in. And who wants the extra poundage that a leather steering wheel cover would add in your bag. Neoprene covers weigh 2.5 ounces and fold into the size of a sleeve of balls making them ideal for storage in even the smallest golf bag pocket.
Sustainability. Leather covers are not machine washable and are not available with an antimicrobial treatment. With use, leather steering wheels become dirty, dry out unless treated repeatedly and become a breeding ground for germs and micro-organisms. Neoprene CartSkinz covers are durable, 100% machine washable and are treated with a non-leaching, EPA safe anti-microbial agent that remains active for the life of the product. CartSkinz are the first steering wheel cover of any type to be treated with an anti-microbial agent, a technique for which Anderson Golf has applied for patent.
Marketability. Leather color selection is limited and leather does not accept logos well. The leather steering wheel cover price point is well beyond that of most promotional items. Neoprene covers are available in any color with any logo and offered at a very attractive price point.
